My June was jam-packed with events, travel, and the mundane. My family had two garage sales, bought a mini-golf season pass, and went to Sacramento/Oakland/San Francisco for a long weekend. There was a lot of joy in June! Below is a short list of two things that brought me the most joy in June followed by a lesson learned. Enjoy!
One. Existing in and around water. It is ironic how I, someone who has only lived in Wyoming, love existing by and in water. As a child, I took swim lessons “in case something happens.” (Thanks, Mom)! I haven’t swam in a pool or been near water in so long that I forgot how calming water could be. In June, I went fishing with my dad at a lake nearby. I could have been out on the lake all day! Later in June, I swam in Sacramento and had to be dragged from the pool to have breakfast and board a plane.
Two. Mini-Golf. Looking back, every stage of my life involved some amount of mini-golf. That sounds like I frequent mini-golf courses, although that is not the happenstance! It happens to be involved in childhood summers, the best dates, and extracurricular work activities. I frequent a Putt Hutt in my town and look forward to going every time. The owner is delightful and takes care of the course! I highly recommend going mini-golfing alone! I don’t feel rushed or embarrassed, and I putt better without an audience.
Lesson Learned: Take your advice. A phrase that bumps around in my head like the DVD logo is “Do it scared!” If something makes me anxious, uneasy, or stretches my comfort zone, the DVD logo hits perfectly in the corner, and all I think “Do it scared!” This has included going to the gym after a long time away, flying by myself, jumping into the pool from a high ledge, and many more out-of-comfort-zone opportunities. 9 out of 10 times I found that whatever it was was not scary, and it brought me joy. 1 out of 10 times, I learned that the next time the same situation arises I do not want to do it again.
What brought you joy in June?
